NEC Show 2007

By Makis - Posted on 30 November 2007

A few thoughts about the NEC show I visited last Sunday.

(and a few pictures here).

First of all it was very busy, and it was only possible to have a good view of the bikes after about 4pm.
It was better organised than previous years, as most (but not all) bike manufacturers stands were on one place, and the equipment/clothing was in another part.
Did not see a lot of bargains but maybe it was only me.
I've tried to get the ACF-50 anticorrosion spray, but I gave up after about 10 minutes of waiting as it was very busy, and decided to get it mail order.

About the bikes now.

First of all it was another year, that Aprilia was not there, which is very disappointing.
I think they have not been in the show for the last 3-4 years if I remember correctly.
Hope they come back next year, with the new Caponord, although I've just saw a report from the Milan show, about the Moto Guzzi Stelvio, and I wish Piaggio haven't decided that they don't need another similar bike !

As for the other bikes in the trail/adventure category, I think the only one that looked very nice was the Benelli Trek.
Especially the Amazonas.
Looked very light, with a lot of good quality components, Excel rims, Brembo etc.
I am not sure if it would be very comfortable and practical though for long trips, although by looking at their website it seems that they had a few doing a South American trip
The seat looked like a sportsbike seat, and I would imagine it would be nothing like Capo's.
Not a lot of engine or fairing protection as standard or aluminium panniers.
It looked much better than the pictures I've seen so far.

The BMW stand it was full as usual.
Full of people and ugly bikes, but that is normal.
A few cosmetic changes I believe to the 1200GS. And of course they had the bikes from Long Way Down.
Strange decision about the F650GS, which is actually an 800!!
I cannot really understand why they kept the name and changed the engine, but...
Very impressed as usual with their customer service, as they were quite happy to arrange a test ride straight away for my wife!

Honda had their new Transalp, that looked a bit heavy and like a small Varadero. They had a special version as well with fog lights, and engine protection,
Nothing special about it, I believe that the front light is very ugly and that it lost its character of the old Transalp.

Yamaha had their new XT that looked interesting and light, with hard panniers and protection, but again I had the impression it looked like they forgot to put something at the front !

Kawasaki's Versys, looked more like a road bike than a trail bike. I think it looked very similar to the Triumph Tiger in its purpose. The green metallic colour looked very nice.

Ducati's Hypermotard looked nice with tricky bits like the folding mirrors, but I don't think it would be very practical, and of course nowhere as nice as Aprilia's Dorsoduro :-) .
